Clayton girls pull out win over SE Raleigh

A slow start greeted Clayton on Friday night, but a rough fourth quarter doomed Southeast Raleigh.

The Comets held the Bulldogs to just two points in the final quarter as Clayton defeated Southeast Raleigh 34-31 in a Greater Neuse River Conference girls basketball game on Friday.

Southeast Raleigh led Clayton 10-2 after the first quarter, but the second quarter was the complete reverse. Clayton held Southeast Raleigh to just two points in the second quarter and scored 11 of its own, taking a 13-12 lead into the break.

The third quarter went back to the Bulldogs. Southeast Raleigh scored 17 points in the third quarter and owned a 29-24 lead going into the final quarter of play.

In a game of runs, Southeast Raleigh again struggled to score from the field. The Bulldogs scored just two points in the fourth quarter and Clayton posted 10 points as the Comets claimed the come-from-behind victory.

Vernessa Hinnant led Clayton in scoring with 17 points.

Amara Bell was the only Southeast Raleigh player in double-figures with 10 points.
