Middle Creek eased past Green Hope Tuesday night, 17-6, in Apex to advance in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys lacrosse state playoffs.

The victory gives Middle Creek a combined season sweep Green Hope in the regular and postseason by a combined score of 53-17.

“We knew that Green Hope is unbelievably athletic. They’re talented; they’re really fast in the middle of the field, [and] they create a lot of transition,” said Middle Creek head coach Nick Holota. “Defensively, we wanted them to beat us on the six-on-six, [and] contain their shooters on that side of the field. Offensively, I think it was just about being patient and understand that we need to take what they gave us. “

The Mustangs pounded on Green Hope early, using a 3-0 run to start the contest en route to a 6-1 halftime lead.

Green Hope scored the final goal of the first quarter with 15.7 second remaining, but Middle Creek shut out the Falcons 3-0 in the final frame of the first half.

The Falcons scored the first goal of the third quarter – and four total in the frame – but Middle Creek’s offense doubled its first-half scoring output with six goals in the third stanza.

Middle Creek continued it second-half swing with a dominant final quarter, outscoring the Falcons 5-1 in the final 12 minutes of play. Four different players scored for the Mustangs in the fourth quarter.

Junior Owen Caputo scored tallied a game-high seven points with five goals and two assists Tuesday night.

“Owen is part of a team offense and he’s able to take advantage of the fact that it’s not just him out there,” Holota said. “He’s always got five other guys that can move the ball. When the game comes to him, he’s hard to stop.

“When you key in on him, we’ve got some other scoring options. If you try to give other scoring options attention, he does a really good job of taking what the defense gives him.”

Senior Nathan Post and Jared Medwar also finished the contest with hat tricks for the Mustangs.

Medwar finished with three goals and two assists. Middle Creek sophomore Jake Caputo also tallied five points with two goals and three assists.

Junior Jack Larkin tallied half of Green Hope’s with a hat trick of his own in a losing effort.

Green Hope finishes the 2017 season with a 14-5 overall record and 13-3 mark in Southwest Wake Conference contests.

Middle Creek (19-0, 16-0 SWAC) advances to host No. 3 seeded Hoggard in the fourth round of the NCHSAA state playoffs on Friday at 7 p.m. in Apex.
